Dance Classes
Students in our classes learn Lindy Hop, the original form of swing dance. Classes take place in 6 week long series with some of the best teachers in the region. Students rotate in class (Lindy Hop is a social dance), so no partner is required. We encourage you to sign up for class as early as possible so that we can maintain a lead/follow balance. Students are welcome to pick either the lead or the follow role (and many people learn both over time), but we do ask that they stick to one role for the duration of each class series.
The drop-in lessons on Monday and Friday are a great way to start, but they don't constitute a full beginner class, so Lindy Hop students are required to take Lindy 1 at least once through before moving on to Lindy 2. If you have experience from elsewhere, feel free to ask an instructor if you're ready for a different level.
This class will launch you into the disturbingly awesome world of Lindy Hop. We cover all the basic moves and concepts that build up to the fancier aspects of the dance, teach you how to lead and follow, and get you meeting new people. The classes in this series are slightly longer than our other classes (an hour and fifteen instead of an hour), as we believe in giving you extra time to practice and absorb the information.
Our classes are currently capped at 50ish students. If the class sells out, please email sarah@mobtownballroom.com to be placed on the waitlist (maybe we will add more classes!).
Students have the choice of taking the class on either Mondays and Wednesdays:
Mondays, February 24-March 31, 6:45-8pm.(students in this class can take the Monday night drop-in from 8-9 for free; there is then a swing dance from 9pm onward)
Wednesdays, February 26-April 2, 6:45-8pm.
This class requires, at a minimum, that you have completed the Lindy 1 six-week series. We will continue to hone your basics throughout the class, but the syllabus is heavy on moves and vocabulary, which are organized to emphasize specific aspects of technique each week. There will be more material than you can master during the hour long class, so outside practice is crucial. Our goal for the end of the series is to have you dancing a wide chunk of basic Lindy Hop material with increasing confidence.
Special Session!
This session of Lindy Hop classes will lead up to our student recital on Wednesday, April 9th. This means that both the Lindy 2 and the Lindy 3 classes will be learning choreography that they will perform as a group. You will still learn moves and technique, but a lot of the focus will be on working as a team and polishing your dancing.
The recital is a favorite event of students and teachers alike, and it’s a chance for you to practice performing and show your non-dance friends what you’ve been up to. It’s essentially a children’s recital, but for adults. We take the learning seriously and ourselves less seriously, as it’s all for fun.
Date of the Recital: April 9th (two showings; we will split each class in half so that everyone gets a chance to perform) and a possible addition of Monday, April 7th or Tuesday, April 8th (depending on the size of each class).
Class Dates:
Sundays 2/23-3/30, 2-3pm - Lindy 2 Routine with Emily and Charlie
Wednesdays 2/26-4/2, 8-9pm - Lindy 2 Routine with Charlie and Kyra
Potential Extra Rehearsal Times (optional): Sunday 4/6, Monday 4/7 (if we don't have an extra recital), Periodic Sundays from 3-5 during the session
Please note: The recital and the class session leading up to it are always chaos, and this year will be no different. That is part of the charm. Please enter the session with an attitude of making it fun, encouraging your fellow students, and not taking yourself too seriously.

This class requires that you’ve completed Lindy 2 at least twice through and get permission from an instructor to join. We will continue to introduce new moves and vocabulary, but a much heavier emphasis will be laid on partnering and structuring a dance--transitioning between steps and combining moves to create something original. Most importantly, we are going to teach you how to cook and then chill: you’re going to dance to different kinds of music differently and communicate shifting levels of intensity to your partner. This is the stage at which dance becomes a conversation.
Just like Lindy 2, this class will cover more material than you can master in an hour/week, so outside practice is crucial.
