Saturday April 25th
Beginner Cyr Wheel Workshop: 11:30-1:30pm $70
In this 2-hour workshop students will be introduced to some of the basic concepts of the Cyr Wheel, including the distinct types of motion the wheel makes, static vs. dynamic balance, and creating rotational momentum. Basic spinning in the wheel will be the main focus, but all types of motion will be explored with manipulations (feet on the ground). No experience necessary. Taught by Randy Kato. For questions please email Kelly Jo at firstname.lastname@example.org
Intermediate Cyr Wheel Workshop: 2:30-4:30pm $70
In this 2-hour workshop students who are able to maintain a waltz and are working on more advanced moves will learn drills to improve overall balance and positional awareness, as well as potentially exploring inversions, twists & turns, off-axis moves, and 3-, 2-, and single-point of contact skills. Which specific skills will depend upon the student’s level and desires. Taught by Randy Kato. For questions please email Kelly Jo at email@example.com
Randy's obsession with the Cyr Wheel began the moment he first saw a video of it online. After many months of fruitless searching for instruction or information in New York City, he ordered a wheel from Montreal and began the long arduous journey of teaching himself. His Space Oddity/Major Tom act was selected to be performed as part of the “David Bowie Is” exhibition at The Brooklyn Museum. He has also performed for Big Apple Circus, The Bindlestiff Family Cirkus, The Chicago Contemporary Circus Festival, NBC News, the CBS Morning Show, Lola Star's Dreamland Roller Disco, and more at venues including The Smithsonian, the NYC World Financial Center Winter Garden, and Caesar’s Palace. He is a Wheel Gymnastics World Championship competitor for Team USA, and he has taught at Circus Warehouse, Streb, Circus Connections, Circadium, Philadeliphia School of Circus Arts, Rebel Circus Arts, Brooklyn AirSpace, Friends Academy, and Kazuko Hirabayashi Dance Theater. Randy hopes to continue spreading his love of this unique art form through performance and instruction.
